LOS ANGELES — The man suspected of killing Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with an attack outside the singer’s South Los Angeles clothing store on Sunday.
Eric Holder, 29, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court hours after the charges were filed by prosecutors, entering his plea, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office tweeted. He is due back on court May 10.
Holder was arrested Tuesday after a nearly 48-hour manhunt. He is being represented by Christopher Darden, a prosecutor in the 1994-95 O.J. Simpson murder trial.
Holder is also charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. The criminal complaint includes allegations that he “personally used a firearm and caused great bodily injury and death,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities say Holder and Hussle, who knew each other, had several conversations Sunday outside the rapper’s store. They say Holder eventually returned with a handgun and shot Hussle, who was declared dead at a hospital. He also wounded two other men during the attack, authorities said.
Holder has a previous felony conviction. In 2012 he pleaded no contest to possession of a loaded firearm and was sentenced to six months in jail and three years’ probation.
Hussle, 33, whose real name was Ermias Asghedom, was engaged to actress Lauren London, with whom he had a 2-year-old son. He had another daughter from a previous relationship.
He was a beloved figure in the community that he was seeking to rebuild starting with his clothing store, among his fellow entertainers, and with public officials who praised his philanthropy and advocacy.
Hussle had success in hip-hop’s inner circles for 10 years through his coveted mixtapes, then last year broke big with his major-label debut album, “Victory Lap,” which was nominated for a Grammy.
Hussle’s murder evoked an outpouring of shock and sympathy tweets from friends and admirers, expressions of outrage from Los Angeles city officials and police, and a massive flower memorial spread out in front of Hussle’s clothing store.
On Monday night, a day after his death, mourners gathered at the memorial for a candlelight vigil meant to honor his life and legacy. Soon, the peaceful assembly turned into a chaotic stampede where at least one person was stabbed and more than a dozen others were injured. Police said a man at the vigil brandished a handgun and another person attempted to disarm him, sparking a destructive rush by mourners to flee the scene.
