Meghan McCain shows her father’s spirit in beautiful, poignant and scathing tribute to him, at times displaying the defiance that came to define him.
If you ever wondered whether President Donald Trump still held a grudge against the late U.S. Sen. John McCain, well, wonder no more.
And if you wondered whether Meghan McCain, co-host of “The View,” would stand silent in the face of Trump’s jabs, well … you didn’t really wonder that, did you?
Actually, you probably didn’t wonder whether Trump holds a grudge, either. But if you needed more proof, on Saturday Trump proved he has still not forgiven McCain – who died on Aug. 25, 2018 – for voting against the Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017.
Trump quoted Ken Starr, the independent counsel who investigated former President Bill Clinton, and slammed McCain in a tweet Saturday, referencing reports that the senator’s office supplied the Trump-Russia dossier to BuzzFeed:
“Spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier ‘is unfortunately a very dark stain against John McCain.’ Ken Starr, Former Independent Counsel. He had far worse ‘stains’ than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!”
It didn’t take Meghan McCain long to respond. She soon tweeted, “No one will ever love you the way they loved my father. … I wish I had been given more Saturday’s with him. Maybe spend yours with your family instead of on twitter obsessing over mine?”
On Sunday, Trump doubled down on his criticism, calling McCain “last in his class” at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and retweeting Trump supporter Lori Hendry’s tweet that read, “WRONG Meghan! Millions of Americans truly LOVE President Trump, not McCain. I’m one!”
These are just the latest salvos in an ongoing war of words between Trump and the McCains. The senator often sparred with Trump, who, during his campaign for the presidency, famously said of McCain, a Vietnam War POW, “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
In February, while appearing on “The Late Show,” Meghan McCain told host Stephen Colbert she didn’t know Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner would attend her father’s funeral, and wished that they hadn’t.
“It made me uncomfortable,” she said. “And I hope I made them uncomfortable, honestly.”
Also in February, Meghan McCain tweeted about Trump before his State of the Union address:
“The president’s obsession with my father 6 months after his death is pathetic and telling — even at a time when he should be focusing on his message to the American public and the state of our union — the greatness of my father’s life and legacy haunts you.”
