There’s more than a wee bit of Ireland in the USA, especially on St. Patrick’s Day, when it seems everybody wants to sport a green shirt, guzzle green beer and be Irish for a day.
If you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, head to Ireland, where pubs have been around since the 10th century. But if you can’t make it across the pond, there are plenty of American pubs with authentic Irish attributes that are worth checking out.
What makes a pub authentically Irish?
Kevin Barry’s Irish Pub in Savannah, Georgia, boils it down to offering “good company, good food, good drink, good music and good conversation.”
At an Irish pub, this could entail being seated at a mahogany bar watching a soccer match with friends while gulping down corned beef and cabbage with a pint of Guinness as musicians jam on acoustic instruments.
“We don’t make the place authentically Irish,” says Tim Picciano of the Dublin Village Tavern in Dublin, Ohio. “Our customers do.”
