SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Glenn Close brought a special guest to the Spirit Awards. His name is Pip, but you can address him as Sir Pippin of Beanfield (which is what he’s called on Instagram).
“He’s my date,” the actress exclaimed after Pip followed her onstage to accept the award for best female lead on Saturday. The Havanese pup then proceeded to roll around near the podium.
“I brought him up for this very reason! It’s called ‘in the moment,’ “ Close said as the crowd in the Spirit Awards tent on the beach laughed.
She continued, re-focusing on her award: “It’s really, really ever about the work, no matter what you’re wearing, no matter what red carpet you walk on, no matter what people say to you. It has all been extremely humbling and gratifying. The fact that we get together and we tell these stories that really make a difference in the world, that is what we do.”
Host Aubrey Plaza joked after the speech that Pip “just scored a three picture deal at Amazon.”
Indeed, Pip was the hit of the independent film event.
Earlier, the good boy obediently followed his mom amid the chaotic flash of cameras, sans leash. A natural star, Pip posed for pictures, allowed nominees including Daveed Diggs to pet him and stood by as Close conducted interviews. (Earlier this year, Pip slept on the table as USA TODAY chatted with Close.)
He followed his award-winning mama all the way to the press room.
It seemed that Pip had an all-around great day that started on the lap of Close’s daughter and “The Wife” co-star, Annie Starke.
Close is also nominated for an Oscar this year for her performance as Joan in “The Wife.” No word on whether Pip will be her plus-one for that show, too.
