Marvel Studios shows a few more details in the backstory of Captain Marvel.
Are you excited for “Captain Marvel”?
Well, based on early reactions, there’s plenty to be stoked about. Critics got a first peek at the latest Marvel superhero film on Tuesday night, and immediately took to Twitter, with many cheering on the Brie Larson-led movie. Here’s a sampling of what they’re saying about Carol Danvers’ origin film so far.
Fandango managing editor Erik Davis called the movie “retro and trippy.”
“#CaptainMarvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really,” he tweeted. “It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places.”
Uproxxx’s Mike Ryan said “Captain Marvel” defied his expectations.
“CAPTAIN MARVEL isn’t what I expected based on marketing. It’s pretty much an ‘all in’ cosmic space movie,” he wrote. “Also, it’s a lot weirder than I expected. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome as Talos. … And not wacky weird like the GOTG movies. Think more ‘Rey snapping into endless mirrors’ from The Last Jedi type scenes. Also, finally, the MCU and a Nirvana song come together (as Kurt Cobain wanted).”
Mashable’s Alison Foreman said Larson was “born to be a superhero.”
” ‘Captain Marvel’ is what would happen if a hyper competitive game of Guess Who had a baby with the #MCU and was raised on equal parts 90’s nostalgia and piping hot feminist takes down,” she said. “I loved it.”
Entertainment Tonight’s Ash Crossan raved, too.
“#CaptainMarvel is (takes deep 90s breath) TOTALLY AWESOME,” she said. “Never related to a Marvel character quite like Carol. She’s the stubborn witty 90s kid I like to think I am.”
IGN’s Jim Vejvoda gave the film a solid thumbs up.
“#CaptainMarvel was a lot of fun!” he said. “Just enough ‘90s nostalgia without overdoing it. Brie Larson is great. Ditto Sam Jackson & Ben Mendelsohn. Goose the cat is purr-fect. Some nice surprises and clever decisions throughout. Cool sci-fi elements. And funny! Thumbs up!”
People’s Kara Warner cheered on the characters Marvel served up.
“Just out of #CaptainMarvel. So many fun surprises I didn’t expect + new (and old?) characters to love,” she wrote.
Oh, and cat people are gonna be psyched.
“Cat people will love this movie,” wrote Den of Geek’s Kayti Burt, adding that “Carol’s hero moment was very cathartic/true to the female experience, imho … The MCU feels more complete now that Carol is in it.”
“Captain Marvel” hits theaters March 8.
