Juan Pablo Galavis has a few thoughts about Arie Luyendyk Jr.‘s controversial Bachelor season.
Warnings from Sydney, Demi and Katie plague Colton Underwood this week, leaving him wondering who is ready for an engagement and who isn’t. And when everyone’s stories don’t line up, our poor Bachelor is left with not much more than his gut to make difficult choices.
By the end of this week’s episode of “The Bachelor,” we have a final four who will bring Colton back to their hometowns.
This week, Colton and the remaining ladies head to his home: Denver. Colton catches up with Ben Higgins (who you’ll remember as Season 20’s Bachelor). Ben actually gives Colton some solid advice after learning about all the “who’s ready and who isn’t” drama. Ben tells him to ask the women individually why they’re there, and also suggests he “lean in” and “be intentional.” The two bro-hug it out (of course they do).
Let’s break down the drama.
Home is where the gossip is
Colton meets up with the women (with dog Sniper in tow, the true star of the episode) and takes Tayshia for a one-on-one. If you’ll remember, at the end of last week’s episode, Tayshia said that “Colton knows that the tea is brewing and he wants someone to spill the tea.”
She kept her promise. After frolicking around Denver together, and telling her that he knows she’s not one of the women he needs to worry about, he asks her what she’s seen or heard.
She tells him that some of the women aren’t necessarily in this for the right reasons − namely, Cassie and Caelynn.
“They’re already talking about being the next ‘Bachelorette,’ ” and have said they didn’t think they were going to be ready for an engagement at the end of this, she tells Colton, and says she believes that’s who Katie, Sydney and Demi were referring to.
Meanwhile, we see Caelynn and Cassie have a conversation where Caelynn explicitly says regarding all this drama, “We know that it’s not us and if someone names us it’s like, ‘Well you don’t know us.’ ”
In an aside, Colton says he had no questions for Caelynn and Cassie, and now he does.
Tayshia and Colton cook dinner together, “just like a regular couple,” Tayshia says. (Nothing about this situation is like a regular couple.)
Colton asks her about her family and she warns him that her dad might be closed off and apprehensive because he’s overprotective. He says, “I won’t be able to get down on a knee if I don’t have a father’s blessing at the end of this. That is something that’s very important to me.” Looks like we’re going to find out: Tayshia gets the episode’s first rose and is officially headed to hometowns. The two head to Colton’s bedroom, or as he calls it, “the place where the magic doesn’t happen.” He says he has started to fall in love with her (via voice-over).
The other side
Caelynn gets the next one-on-one. The two go snowboarding, which she hasn’t done before. It’s predictably adorable. What not predictably adorable is the confrontation they’re about to have.
Colton explains that Tayshia thought she was of the women who wasn’t quite ready, but that he wants to hear her out.
“It doesn’t make any sense to me.” she says. “The readiness that I feel is in my heart and it’s not something that someone can look at from the outside and just know.” She says Tayshia’s story is “completely fabricated.” In an aside: “I feel like my future was just ripped away from me because there’s an insecure 28-year-old girl running around the house. I’m the only one that’s falling in love with Colton,” followed by some explicit language.
Colton gets teary-eyed in an aside and says he’s confused more than ever. Caelynn makes a further heartfelt plea for him and tells him she’s falling in love with him. She, too, gets a rose. He tells her, “I know that I am falling in love with you.” Tayshia versus Caelynn, commence.
The two go to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where they dance and kiss to a private concert from country singer Brett Young.
Caelynn later confides in Cassie about what Tayshia said, and then goes to Tayshia herself. “To be quite honest the only two people that acted defensively … were worried about (Katie’s) conversation were you and Cassie,” Tayshia says. Tayshia adds that the women all came to the same conclusion: It was Caelynn and Cassie. Looks like “she said, she said, she said,” yet again.
The goodbyes begin
Hannah B. gets the final one-on-one, and Colton introduces her to his family. But it’s not that big a step in their relationship after all. Colton is not there yet with her. She, unfortunately, is. He sends her home.
She tells him, “Listen to people about things and people’s intentions,” in another round of cryptic advice. She’s pissed. The other women in the house are shocked she’s going home.
This all leaves Hannah G., Kirpa, Cassie and Heather to go on a group date together. Two of them are definitely going home.
They all hop on a train to the mountains together. He takes “has been kissed” Heather aside first, and in a twist, she tells him that it wouldn’t be fair to take him to her hometown if she’s not 100 percent confident she’s ready for that. Looks like she’ll get the chance to kiss someone else.
Next up: Cassie. Colton tells her the truth about what Tayshia said about her. “I am telling you, I would not be here if it weren’t for you,” Cassie tells him.
When it’s Kirpa’s turn, she tells Colton she doesn’t want him to be blindsided and says she has concerns about Cassie and Caelynn. She says that they were the only two girls who got defensive after Katie left, and everyone thought that was very strange.
Cassie and Kirpa then battle it out, with Hannah G. staying quiet while they fight. “Why are you bringing up things that aren’t true to him?” Cassie says. Kirpa says she’s seen red flags.
Colton still isn’t sure what to do with the roses and needs more clarity.
Who goes home: Cassie or Kirpa?
The group heads back, with Cassie and Kirpa’s tension unresolved. Colton takes Hannah G. aside and leaves Cassie and Kirpa to sit awkwardly in silence. He comes back in to grab a rose for Hannah G, who later recaps the Cassie/Kirpa beef to Caelynn and Tayshia.
Caelynn goes to Colton and tells him she wants him to have all the facts, and he gives the rose to … Cassie!
He says he’s falling in love with her in an aside.
Caelynn and Cassie may have been on the same side this week, but with only four women left in the competition, they’re going to have to turn on each other at some point, right? And now that Tayshia is left without ally Kirpa, who knows if she’ll survive another week?
