QB’s helmet knocked off in Alliance of American Football opener

The Alliance of American Football has to be pleased that a big hit quickly went viral in the first quarter of its nationally televised league opener on Saturday.

Unfortunately it came at the expense of quarterback Mike Bercovici.

Bercovici, a former Arizona State QB starting for the San Diego Fleet, dropped back and was completely blindsided by San Antonio linebacker Shaan Washington. The hit sent Bercovici’s helmet flying as he also lost control of the ball.

Bercovici was seen running on the sideline after the hit and was back in the game for the next series.

He was benched late in Saturday’s game, but it didn’t appear to be injury-related.

Bercovici originally signed with the Arizona Hotshots and would have returned to play at Sun Devil Stadium, but the Hotshots didn’t protect him in the quarterback draft and selected Trevor Knight instead.
