Jennifer Garner is getting real about life in the public eye.
“How do you adapt your career to your life? That’s a big question,” the actress, 46, wrote in WSJ. magazine’s March Women’s Style Issue. “Becoming someone who is well-known requires an enormous adaptation.”
Garner, who catapulted to fame with her leading roles in the TV series “Alias” and hit movie “13 Going on 30,” said she experienced another level of recognition after marrying actor Ben Affleck in 2005.
“Something Ben and I used to say to each other all the time is, ‘We have to adapt,'” she wrote. “We were surrounded by paparazzi. There were so many things you wouldn’t expect. We’d be left alone more at Disneyland than we would at a park in Santa Monica.”
The media frenzy only intensified after the couple had children. Garner and Affleck share three kids: Violet, 13, Seraphina, 10, and Samuel, 6.
“Then there’s having children and, in my case, a career that’s a very selfish one,” the “Camping” star said. “The combination of those things is the largest adaptation of all. When I had kids, I started considering how jobs worked for my family. How much am I going to ask of my partner and kids? What’s worth it and what isn’t?”
Despite the discomforts that come with the limelight, Garner added that, “if you love something, you’ll do whatever you need to do.”
Affleck and Garner announced their plans to divorce in 2015 after 10 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in October, shortly after Affleck completed treatment for alcohol addiction.
